bigbasket, a TATA enterprise and a leading online supermarket, has witnessed a 42% increase in patriotic merchandise sales compared to last year during Independence Day 2025.
Popular products included tricolour stoles and dupattas (sales up 45%), national flags (demand up 35%), and badges and wristbands (up 51%). The combined length of flags sold was equivalent to 16.83 times the height of the Eiffel Tower. Remarkably, the volume of tricolour stoles sold by mid-day on 15th August surpassed the entire day’s sales from last year.
The day also brought unprecedented demand for electronics, with bigbasket offering the iPhone 16 (128 GB) at ₹67,990, the lowest retail price in India ahead of the iPhone 17 launch. The model was delivered to eager buyers in as little as 13 minutes, marking a new milestone.
The very next day, Janmashtami celebrations saw extraordinary traction for puja essentials, festive décor, and dairy products, with customers embracing bigbasket’s curated festive range. Sales of Ladoo Gopal poshaks grew by 500%, dressing more than 15,000 Bal Gopals.
Krishna Sinhasans surged 700%, while over 8,000 flutes (Bansuris) and thousands of decorative Matkis (up 400%) were sold. Accessories such as Bal Mukut, Pagdi, and Ladoo Gopal jewellery also saw strong demand. By the afternoon of Janmashtami alone, bigbasket achieved two-thirds of last year’s total festival business.
Speaking about the dual festive success, Seshu Kumar, Chief Buying and Merchandising Officer at bigbasket, said, “This festive season, our customers didn’t just shop – they celebrated. From tricolour flags and stoles that filled homes with patriotic pride, to Krishna poshaks, bansuris, and matkis that enriched Janmashtami traditions, we saw India’s spirit of unity and devotion come alive.
Added to this was the record-breaking uptake of our electronics deals, including the nation’s lowest iPhone 16 price, all delivered within minutes. The way our customers are blending tradition with technology is inspiring, and we are proud to enable their celebrations seamlessly.”
bigbasket’s performance during Independence Day and Janmashtami highlights how festival shopping in India is shifting, with customers expecting not just variety and value but also speed.
